Derek Hills is originally from Summit, South Dakota, and joined Frieberg, Nelson & Ask, LLP in 2025. Derek earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from South Dakota State University.  Derek received his Juris Doctorate from the University of South Dakota Knudson School of Law and became licensed to practice in 2025.  Derek is a member of the State Bar of South Dakota.

While an undergrad student, Derek  interned with the South Dakota Legislative Research Council during South Dakota’s legislative session.  In law school, Derek was an active participant in the Works Clinic, which provides divorce and custody assistance for low-income couples and families in South Dakota, interned with the South Dakota Federal Public Defenders office assisting clients in criminal cases ranging from misdemeanors to felonies and at the Kohlmeyer-Hagen Law firm in Mankato, Minnesota. 

Derek is based out of our Beresford office and focuses on litigation, criminal defense, family law, estate planning, and lobbying.
